Rachel Oaks Preston was a Seventh-day Baptist school teacher in Washington, NH. She was part of a small congregation that had become Millerites. As the pastor urge his congregation that all commandments be obeyed, she discussed with him the seventh-day Sabbath. He and part of the congregation accepted her ideas, and a seventh-day form of Adventism was born.
The red brick structure is a typical modern revival of the Federal Style architecture so popular in New England. The fist section was begun in 1929, but not completed until 1943 due to the materials shortage of World War II. Two more sections were added and completed in 1963 and 1967.
